Multi-disciplinary is a confession, not a positioning.

The phrase tells the buyer you haven't decided what you are. AI is making this confession more expensive every quarter.

Multi-disciplinary is a confession, not a positioning. The phrase tells the buyer one thing, and only one thing: we have not decided what we are. It used to be free to say. AI is making it expensive.

For thirty years the multi-disciplinary agency was the dominant model. Marketing departments wanted one phone call. Procurement wanted one bill. Agencies wanted one master services agreement. Everyone got what they thought they wanted. Then the services work that justified the breadth got eaten by software, and the buyers stopped wanting one phone call.

What buyers actually want now.

Two things, in order: a position that is sharp enough to be wrong about, and a small team of people who think for a living. The breadth — campaigns, social, SEO, email, web — they assume you can either produce in-house with AI or buy from a marketplace for half what an agency would charge.

This is the inversion. The breadth that used to be the asset is now the discount. The depth that used to be hard to sell is the only thing left worth paying for.

The price of staying broad.

A multi-disciplinary agency competes on price for every line of work. AI bids alongside you on every line. You will lose more of those bids each quarter. There is no clever account structure that fixes this. The economics have moved.

The agencies that have noticed are doing one of two things. Either they are quietly narrowing — dropping service lines, raising minimums, refusing to pitch on services-only RFPs — or they are still pitching on everything and burning through their best people. The first set is shrinking on purpose. The second set is shrinking by accident. The first set will be intact in 2028.

What a position sounds like.

A position fits in a sentence. It survives one hostile question from a buyer who already has options. It implies the work you will not take. Brand Intelligence Firm implies the services work we do not take. Full-service creative agency implies nothing, which is exactly its problem.

Multi-disciplinary means replaceable. Specialization, said publicly, is the moat.

The cost of saying that out loud is that some readers stop reading. That is the cost. It is also the entire point.
